SHANGHAI — Architecture and design firm HCCH Studio has completed Bothaus, a newly opened reception and exhibition space located on the lower floor of Sudo Technology’s office and robotics laboratory tower along Shanghai’s prominent Yangpu waterfront. Conceived primarily as a welcoming hub and coffee space for the embodied intelligence company and its invited visitors, the project explores a unique conceptual brief that challenges traditional perceptions of high-tech environments.
Situated within a rapidly developing urban and technological corridor, Bothaus serves as the public-facing threshold for Sudo Technology, a firm specializing in advanced robotics and artificial intelligence. While such companies typically gravitate toward sleek, futuristic, and heavily stylized interiors filled with overt displays of advanced machinery and digital interfaces, the collaboration between HCCH Studio and the tech firm took a decidedly different path. At the very outset of the project, the client introduced a design brief that immediately captured the architects’ interest, requesting that the space possess a distinct "low-tech feel."
The designers found this directive both intriguing and conceptually rich. Rather than treating the phrase as a simple aesthetic preference for rustic materials or retro styling, HCCH Studio interpreted it as a deeper exploration of our evolving relationship with technology. In an era where digital systems and automation are becoming ubiquitous, the concept suggests a future where technology is seamlessly embedded into everyday life, growing increasingly quiet, tactile, and inconspicuous.
This philosophical approach directly shaped the spatial organization and material palette of Bothaus. Instead of overwhelming visitors with flashing lights, metallic surfaces, and aggressive technological displays, the interior environment relies on grounded textures, human-scaled spaces, and an atmosphere of calm and contemplation. Located on the ground level of the Sudo Developer Center, the venue functions as a transition zone between the bustling urban fabric of the Yangpu waterfront and the rigorous, high-precision research laboratories operating in the upper floors of the tower.

Wood, glass, and carefully curated lighting fixtures work in harmony to create an environment that feels welcoming rather than intimidating. The design accommodates multiple functions within its compact footprint, serving as a casual coffee bar for informal meetings, a reception area for visiting partners and researchers, and an exhibition space capable of showcasing the developments of the embodied intelligence company.
The spatial configuration encourages interaction while maintaining a sense of openness. By prioritizing organic textures and understated architectural detailing, HCCH Studio has managed to bridge the gap between human comfort and cutting-edge industrial innovation. The presence of the coffee bar acts as a social catalyst, drawing people together in a shared physical space, which stands in deliberate contrast to the increasingly isolated and screen-dependent nature of modern digital development.
The completion of Bothaus adds a notable architectural intervention to Shanghai’s Yangpu waterfront district, an area that has undergone a significant transformation from a historical industrial manufacturing zone into a thriving hub for technology, innovation, and creative industries.
