Those peaceful, nature-filled surroundings would serve as the beloved icon’s ultimate respite, particularly in the wake of her daunting 1992 breast cancer diagnosis. Battling the disease on and off for an incredible 30 years, Newton-John channeled her immense energy into vital medical research and holistic wellness advocacy. All the while, she maintained the signature optimism that had long defined both her career and her public persona. "I’m not a victim and I don’t want to be one," she once reflected during an interview with CBS Mornings. "I feel what has happened to me has happened for a purpose."
Two Aussies in London
Long before she was a household name in Hollywood or filling stadiums around the world, Newton-John was just a teenager navigating the bustling, unfamiliar streets of the British capital. Only a few months after her initial move to London, her close friend and fellow singer Pat Carroll also made the bold leap from Australia to the bustling metropolis.
Circumstances soon brought the two young women together under one roof. Carroll wound up living with Newton-John and her mother in their cozy Hampstead mews apartment for two tumultuous, formative years. Recalling those early days of struggle and ambition, Newton-John often shared fond memories of their living arrangements, noting that they were "sleeping on the floor on a blow-up mattress."
"It was great because you don’t know any different," Newton-John recalled of that period. "We were young girls."
Pat and Olivia
As she settled into life abroad, Newton-John began tagging along with Carroll to her various nightclub gigs around the city simply to keep the raven-haired singer company. Before long, the two friends realized they might gain more professional traction in the cutthroat music industry as a united front, ultimately forming the musical duo Pat and Carroll.
"At home it was okay. You know all the boys and producers. Everyone. Over here [in London] you hardly know a soul," Carroll once explained to a local newspaper regarding their decision to team up. "That’s why we decided to team up. It’s easy to get to know people in the business when there are two of you."
The dynamic duo went on to perform at multiple nightclubs and pubs scattered across London, even making several notable television appearances. However, their burgeoning partnership was ultimately cut short when Carroll’s visa expired, forcing her to return home to Australia.
Sun Goddess
As her career continued to gain momentum, Newton-John found love and domestic tranquility with her then-fiance, Bruce Welch, a member of the legendary rock group The Shadows. In 1970, TV Week captured the 21-year-old rising star relaxing in the expansive backyard of the charming Georgian-style house she shared with the 28-year-old musician.
The couple’s home was situated in the bucolic Hadley Common neighborhood of Hertfordshire, an affluent town resting gracefully on the northern edge of London. Newton-John took full advantage of the lush, green surroundings to indulge in her deep longing for the climate of her youth.
"At the first sign of sunshine I’m out sun-bathing in the back garden," she told the publication at the time. "That’s what I miss about Australia, the sun."
For the Love of Animals
During that same 1970 TV Week photo shoot, Newton-John was frequently snapped playing with her Red Setter, Geordie, a thoughtful gift from Welch. The songstress was a deeply passionate animal lover and dedicated advocate throughout her life. Her dedication extended far beyond keeping pets at home; she even hosted an Australian television series titled Human Nature, which documented her travels around the globe as she reported on various animals and their natural habitats.
Her commitment to her furry companions was a defining aspect of her daily life and financial priorities. "My biggest expense, more than clothes or anything, is the care of the animals, the food and everything," Newton-John once candidly confessed to Ladies Home Journal.
Although Newton-John and Welch shared their primary domestic life in Hadley Commons for the duration of their relationship, the busy entertainer also maintained a smaller flat near Carnaby Street to crash at whenever she had late-night engagements or pressing business in central London. Ultimately, Newton-John and Welch ended their engagement in 1972, closing a significant chapter of her early adulthood.
Country Girl
The early 1970s marked a monumental turning point as Newton-John achieved massive, breakthrough success in the United States, transitioning from a British-based pop act to an international icon. Sometime between 1975 and 1976, the entertainer purchased a secluded, three-acre Malibu property directly bordered by protected parkland.
The two-story ranch home featured a sprawling primary suite that occupied the entire second floor, offering sweeping views of the surrounding wilderness. The estate was further appointed with a shimmering swimming pool, a tennis court, a rustic barn, and meandering walking paths framed by lush, native vegetation.
Offering plenty of fresh air and ample room for her ever-growing menagerie of animals, the rustic setting deeply appealed to the singer, who resided there happily for nearly 18 years. "I love being in the country and this is as close to the country as I can be without being too far from town," she observed of the picturesque escape.
The Almost Veterinarian
At her Malibu ranch, Newton-John was finally able to fully indulge the childhood fantasies she had harbored about living surrounded by a multitude of animals. Looking back on her upbringing, she often recounted her early tendencies toward rescue work.
"I was always bringing home strays," Newton-John told Ladies Home Journal of her youth. "Pero Mum wasn’t crazy about animals and I wasn’t allowed to keep them."

But then again, I figured I had to go to medical school and science wasn’t a good subject for me, so I dropped the idea pretty soon," she later recalled to Interview magazine.

Life on the Malibu estate was nothing short of a bustling sanctuary. "It’s like a zoo," Newton-John famously remarked of the diverse collection of animals she kept on the property.
Among her beloved brood was Judge, her favorite horse, alongside a Tennessee walker named Copy Jay, an Appaloosa filly called Eloise, and several other horses named George, Alex, and Pipes. Her canine family included majestic Great Danes named Zargon, Domino, and Gretchen, as well as an Irish Setter named Jackson.
"I have four cats, nine dogs at the moment, and five horses. They’re fabulous. I ride them all at once," she proudly noted in a 1977 interview, capturing the joyful chaos of her idyllic daily routine.
A Tree-Lined Retreat
Continuing her lifelong quest for peaceful, natural environments, Newton-John purchased 187 acres of pristine land in 1981, located in a rural pocket roughly 40 minutes away from the vibrant beach town of Byron Bay in New South Wales, Australia.
The charming three-bedroom, two-bathroom country home served as a dedicated sanctuary away from the exhausting pressures of fame. Perched gracefully on a hilltop, the residence offered expansive, breathtaking views of the neighboring Victoria Park Nature Reserve.
In addition to a tennis court, the magnificent acreage featured a serene pond, a winding creek, two dams, a natural waterfall, and eventually 5,000 native trees personally planted by Newton-John to restore the landscape.
Design Inspiration
Embracing the hands-on task of interior designer, the "Physical" singer meticulously transformed the Byron Bay farmhouse into a rustic, French-inspired retreat. According to her business partner, Gregg Cave, Newton-John designed the entire interior aesthetic around four salvaged gothic church doors, placing two grand pieces at the home’s main entrance and the remaining two at the threshold of the primary suite.
To complete the earthy, timeless atmosphere, she incorporated warm pine floors, exposed wood-beam ceilings, gothic-style pew benches, and a striking accent wall surfaced entirely with stones and seashells collected from the local beach.
As her travels and life circumstances shifted, Newton-John ultimately sold the cherished Australian property in 2019, as her visits to the country increasingly found her staying at Gaia, the nearby luxury wellness retreat she had co-founded in 2005. True to the private, grounded spirit that guided her entire existence, the beloved music legend passed away from cancer in 2022 at her beloved Southern California ranch, leaving behind an enduring legacy of grace, music, and deep connection to the natural world.
