What began as an ephemeral, single-night spatial installation for Amsterdam Fashion Week 2026 has successfully evolved into a permanent series of collectible design objects. Following an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response to their collaborative table setting during the event’s high-profile opening dinner, renowned natural stone supplier SolidNature and celebrated Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis have officially released a limited edition of their striking, sculptural candleholders.
Originally arranged across a minimal white dining table to form a continuous, fluid visual gradient, the individual pieces are now available to the public in an exclusive release of 400 carved stone objects. The design draws a direct, thoughtful link between fashion styling and object composition, allowing users to arrange single pieces into custom modular setups that cleverly mimic the organic movement and warm color palette of a living flame.
A Shared Exploration of Color and Natural Stone
The new collaboration builds directly upon a shared design language established over several years between SolidNature and Sabine Marcelis, both of whom are widely known for their material-focused explorations and boundary-pushing installations. Their ongoing creative partnership previously produced the critically acclaimed "Beyond the Surface" installation during Milan Design Week 2023. That monumental project featured a dramatic seven-meter-long dining table crafted from six distinct varieties of travertine, bound together by Marcelis’s signature color-treated glass.
Where their Milan installation utilized natural stone as a monumental architectural foundation anchoring an entire room, this limited-edition collection brings the raw material up and onto the tabletop, allowing it to directly shape the ambient atmosphere of an everyday domestic space. Marcelis’s independent practice frequently centers on the interplay of light, geometric precision, and material transformation, while SolidNature contributes its deep technical mastery as an esteemed stone supplier specializing in the sourcing, cutting, and carving of rare natural stones from around the globe.
From One-Night Dinner to Collectible Art
While the original runway installation featured a diverse palette of six different natural stones across three distinct sizes, SolidNature and Sabine Marcelis carefully refined the concept for the commercial release into two distinct, highly expressive stone types: Honey Onyx and Sunset Dune Travertine.
Honey Onyx is defined by a natural translucency that allows ambient light to pass effortlessly through its soft orange surface, illuminating the rich internal mineral layers hidden within the stone. In sharp contrast, Sunset Dune Travertine offers a grounded, earthy red hue marked by porous textures that have been shaped through complex geological processes over thousands of years.
"Natural stone carries a history that no designer can replicate," explains David Mahyari, owner of SolidNature. "What I love about this collaboration is how Sabine brings that history into a contemporary context, revealing qualities that might otherwise be overlooked. Seeing the response to the installation made us want to share that experience with a wider audience, so we created objects that people can live with and make their own."
Mahyari further notes the parallels between the design approach and the fashion world that originally hosted the collaboration. "Like a fashion collection, the design of the candleholders is defined by carefully selected textures, patterns, colors, and shapes. Each piece is a powerful statement in its own right, but when combined, they take on a completely different function or appearance," he tells designboom.
Carved meticulously from solid blocks of stone, each piece retains a distinctive curved silhouette specifically engineered to accommodate three standard dinner candles. Because the direction of the stone cutter’s blade reveals varying veining patterns—shifting fluidly from sharp, linear runs to soft, cloud-like formations—every single candleholder remains entirely unique, bearing the unmistakable fingerprint of natural geology.
Offered in two lengths measuring 500 and 650 millimeters, with a uniform width of 100 millimeters and a height of 150 millimeters, the four distinct variations are strictly limited to 100 pieces each, bringing the global total to 400 collectible items.
