As the global architecture and design community transitions into the warmer months of 2023, a diverse and compelling slate of exhibitions, premier industry events, and high-stakes competitions is taking center stage. From rare retrospectives of modern masters and explorations of forgotten Eastern Bloc socialist spaces to massive transit infrastructure overhauls and cutting-edge ecological garden design, this season’s programming highlights the profound ways architects and designers are engaging with history, urbanism, and the natural environment.

Among the standout museum presentations is an ambitious collaborative exhibition currently on view at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin. Titled Retrotopia: Design for Socialist Spaces, the exhibition explores the vast body of work produced by architects and designers in the former Eastern Bloc during the Cold War. By displaying both realized and conceptual spaces imagined by creators working behind the Iron Curtain, the exhibit successfully brings to light a wealth of material by figures who remain largely little known in the Western world. Notable among them are Czech architect Věra Machoninová, Estonian designers Sirje Runge and Bruno Tomberg, and German architect Lutz Brandt. The project offers a fascinating window into alternative architectural ideologies and spatial practices from the 1960s to the 1980s.

Another major horticultural and design exhibition is drawing crowds in Weil am Rhein, Germany. Running from March 25 through October 3, 2023, the Vitra Design Museum is presenting Garden Futures: Designing with Nature. Designed by the Milan-based studio Formafantasma, the exhibition delves deep into the history and future of the modern garden, arguing persuasively for horticulture as a potentially radical means of experimentation and incubation. Encompassing a broad scope of inquiry that stretches from contemporary community gardens and green facades to vertical urban farms, the exhibition features foundational work by visionary landscape architects Roberto Burle Marx and Mien Ruys, alongside artist Derek Jarman.

Ongoing Exhibitions

The spring cultural calendar is further enriched by several ongoing exhibitions examining urban transformation, utopian architectural theory, and the legacy of Italian drawing.

In Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Harvard Graduate School of Design is hosting an exhibition titled Reconfiguring the City Through Radical Infrastructure: Grand Paris Express, on view through March 31, 2023. This presentation directly coincides with the school’s decision in January to award the 14th Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design to the Grand Paris Express, currently the largest transit infrastructure project in Europe. Slated for completion in 2030, this ambitious regional plan will add four new metro lines, 125 miles of new tracks, and 68 new stations to the Paris public transit system. Its primary goal is to seamlessly connect underserved peripheral neighborhoods to the historic city center. To accompany the award, the Druker Design Gallery is showcasing detailed project models, architectural renderings, documentary footage, and various media chronicling the massive undertaking.

March 2023: Dates and Events

Meanwhile, in Tallinn, Estonia, the Estonian Museum of Architecture is presenting Forecast and Fantasy: Architecture Without Borders, 1960s–1980s, which runs through April 30, 2023. Curated by architectural scholars Andres Kurg and Mari Laanemets of the Estonian Academy of the Arts, the exhibition focuses on the utopian designs produced by the so-called "paper architects" during two turbulent decades of the late 20th century. Responding to the emerging technological realities of the era, these designers challenged the established Modernist utopias of scientific planning and social engineering. Instead, they imagined entirely new frameworks for harmony among humans, machines, nature, and the built environment. The exhibition features work by more than 30 architects and collectives, including Yuri Avvakumov, István B. Gellér, Jozef Jankovič, Archizoom, OHO, and Superstudio.

In Berlin, the Museum of Architectural Drawing—in collaboration with the Fondazione Aldo Rossi in Milan—is presenting Aldo Rossi. Insulae through May 14, 2023. This major exhibition displays over 110 works by the late Italian architect, many of which are being shown publicly for the first time. The presentation is organized into three distinct sections: Corpus Mediolanensis, Works for Berlin, and Insula. The latter series, which gives the exhibition its title, features a remarkable collection of drawings by Rossi inspired directly by architectural models from classical antiquity, demonstrating his enduring fascination with historical typologies and urban memory.

Events

The spring and summer calendar also marks the return of several vital global gatherings for furniture designers, urbanists, and commercial interior professionals.

After three consecutive years of pandemic-related cancellations and scheduling disruptions, the world’s largest furniture fair, the Salone del Mobile, returns to Milan for its 61st edition from April 18 to 23, 2023. Drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the globe, the massive fair showcases an extraordinary array of international furnishings, lighting designs, and innovative materials. This year’s programming is notably highlighted by a special curated exhibition designed by architect Mario Cucinella, focusing on sustainable approaches to design and production.

In Spain, the architecture and design festival Concéntrico 09 is set to return to Logroño for its ninth iteration from April 27 to May 2, 2023. Over the course of six days, the festival will animate the city with a dynamic roster of events, temporary architectural installations, and exhibitions. The featured design proposals and concepts are chosen specifically for their ability to celebrate the public realm, civic engagement, and everyday urban life.

March 2023: Dates and Events

Looking ahead to early summer, the annual commercial interior design fair NeoCon will bring industry professionals to Chicago from June 12 to 14, 2023. Having been held in the city continuously since 1969, NeoCon remains a premier destination for learning about and experiencing the latest innovations in commercial workplace and hospitality design. This year, nearly one million square feet of exhibition space will display more than 400 distinct products from both leading industry manufacturers and emerging independent designers.

Competitions

For practitioners and students looking to showcase their design excellence, several prominent international competitions have announced calls for entries with deadlines spanning the spring and summer.

The Holcim Foundation is currently accepting submissions for the Holcim Awards 2023, with a deadline of March 30, 2023. This prestigious global competition recognizes projects that successfully combine sustainable design and construction with the highest standards of architectural excellence. Submitted entries are evaluated against the Foundation’s rigorous benchmarks for sustainable construction. Gold, Silver, and Bronze prizes will be awarded across five major geographic regions: Europe, North America, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, and the Asia Pacific. Regional winners will receive substantial cash prizes and invitations to attend the official prize announcement ceremony at the 2023 Venice Biennale of Architecture.

In the realm of architectural representation, the AIA-St. Louis chapter is seeking entries for its annual AIA National Photography Competition, which has a submission deadline of April 3, 2023. Open to licensed architects and currently enrolled architecture students, the competition honors excellence in photographic interpretations of the built environment. Winning photographs will be published in Architectural Record and prominently exhibited at the 2023 AIA conference in April.

Additionally, Architecture at Zero 2023, a competition presented in part by AIA California, has set a submission deadline of June 15, 2023. The competition invites visionary design proposals for an agricultural center in Allensworth, California—the historic first town in the state to be founded, financed, and governed entirely by African-Americans. Centering on core principles of decarbonization, equity, and resilience, the competition brief challenges students and professionals alike to craft proposals that honor and advance the site’s aspirations as a thriving destination for sustainable agriculture and the preservation of Black history.
