Brabus continues to push the boundaries of automotive extravagance with its latest creation, proving that the renowned German tuning house has no intention of scaling back its radical transformations of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Unveiled to the public, the new Brabus 900 Rocket Edition Cabrio takes the iconic military-derived 4×4 and reinterprets it as an ultra-high-performance convertible. While this is not the first time the Bottrop-based workshop has chopped the roof off a modern G-Wagen, the 900 Rocket Edition Cabrio stands as the most powerful open-top variant the company has ever produced. Furthermore, unlike some of its strictly single-build predecessors, this extreme machine will be made available in two distinct flavors, albeit in a strictly limited production run.
The philosophy behind the 900 Rocket Edition Cabrio draws a direct lineage from previous open-air heavyweights like the Brabus XL 800 Cabrio. To achieve the conversion, engineers start with a standard Mercedes-AMG G 63 and meticulously remove the entire roof structure, cutting away the metal above the beltline and past the C-pillar. In place of the fixed roof, Brabus has engineered a sophisticated motorized soft top. This folding roof mechanism incorporates roughly 500 newly developed components, including a specialized carbon-fiber front bow designed to maintain the fabric’s taut aerodynamic shape even when the vehicle is driven at very high speeds.
The structural modification gives the G-Wagen an entirely different profile, but the exterior alterations extend far beyond the absence of a roof. The 900 Rocket Edition Cabrio adopts an aggressive, aerodynamic body kit that emphasizes its immense power. The front fascia has been completely redesigned with sharper air intakes, a prominent hood scoop, and dramatically flared wheel arches that widen the stance of the vehicle significantly. Replacing the traditional Mercedes-Benz grille and three-pointed star is a custom assembly featuring two striking red slats and the tuner’s signature illuminated "B" logo. Completing the exterior aesthetic is a set of bespoke "Platinum Edition" monoblock wheels. These rims pay direct homage to the distinctive three-spoke wheel design that defined many of Brabus’s most iconic performance builds during the 1980s.
Stepping inside the cabin reveals an extensive overhaul that matches the dramatic exterior. The interior has been reconfigured into a dedicated four-seat layout, featuring a continuous center console that runs between both rows of seats. Every square inch of the space is enveloped in a luxurious combination of premium black leather and Alcantara. This dark, moody atmosphere is punctuated by high-gloss carbon-fiber trim panels adorning the dashboard and center console, alongside vibrant Rocket Red accents scattered throughout the cockpit. Each of the four individual seats features quilted leather inserts finished in Brabus’s trademark shell pattern, underscoring the painstaking craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into every vehicle leaving the Bottrop facility.
True to its reputation as a premier performance tuner, Brabus did not leave the AMG G 63’s powertrain untouched. Underneath the vented hood lies a heavily reworked 4.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine, a notable displacement increase over the factory Mercedes-Benz 4.0-liter unit. This custom-built powerplant is packed with high-end mechanical upgrades, including forged pistons, high-performance connecting rods, and a specialized billet crankshaft designed to withstand extreme thermal and mechanical loads.
The result of these extensive engine modifications is a staggering output of 888 horsepower and 922 foot-pounds of torque. This immense wave of power is channeled to all four wheels through a responsive nine-speed automatic transmission. Performance figures for the heavy convertible are startling: Brabus claims the 900 Rocket Edition Cabrio can sprint from zero to 62 miles per hour in a mere 3.2 seconds. To ensure safety and tire integrity, the vehicle’s top speed is electronically limited to 149 miles per hour. To manage the vehicle’s dynamics across varying driving conditions, the Cabrio is also equipped with an adjustable suspension system capable of lowering the ride height by 1.8 inches for improved high-speed stability and cornering prowess.
Exclusivity is a cornerstone of the Brabus brand, and the 900 Rocket Edition Cabrio is no exception. The company has announced plans to build just 10 examples of this ultra-exclusive open-top machine, prompting prospective buyers to move quickly if they wish to secure an allocation. Pricing for the latest creation from Bottrop starts at 890,740 euros, which translates to a little more than $1 million at current exchange rates, positioning the vehicle firmly in the upper echelon of collector-grade luxury automobiles.
