Sustainability often flourishes in simplicity. Caring for the planet becomes remarkably easy when real, convenient, and functional alternatives step in to replace heavily polluting options. Renowned Italian coffee giant Lavazza kept this core reality firmly in mind when developing Tablèt, a capsule-free, single-serve coffee system that has recently captured third place in the designboom Special Prize at the Seoul Design Award.
The achievement highlights a growing shift in industrial and consumer design toward circular thinking, proving that everyday consumer habits can be fundamentally reimagined without sacrificing the quality, speed, or pleasure of a daily ritual.
The Problem with Capsule Coffee: Convenience Versus Hidden Environmental Waste
Until now, coffee lovers seeking a quick single-serve cup have generally faced a limited set of choices: go through the traditional, time-consuming hassle of preparing a full pot each time they wanted a drink, rely on instant coffee, or turn to the ubiquitous modern convenience of a capsule machine.

While the third option has exploded in popularity across global markets due to its speed, consistency, and ease of use, it carries a severe environmental side effect that is frequently overlooked by consumers in their daily routines.
According to figures from Deutsche Umwelthilfe, a prominent environmental organization cited by Lavazza in its official award submission, approximately 20 billion coffee capsules are consumed and subsequently discarded every year across the globe. Germany alone accounts for a staggering 3.4 billion of these single-serve units, generating roughly 13,500 metric tons of physical waste annually.
Hailing from Italy—a country where coffee is deeply embedded in culture, daily routine, and strict tradition—a multidisciplinary design team was acutely aware of this massive environmental challenge. Led by principal designer Florian Seidl, alongside colleagues Angelica Rella, Marco Rotundo, and Nicola Bettoni, the team set out to tackle the paradox of modern convenience head-on.

Capsule-Free Coffee: A Revolution Rooted in Thinking Outside the Box
Faced with mounting waste statistics, the Lavazza design team posed a revolutionary question: what if there were an entirely different way to prepare a single serving of high-quality coffee?
Tablèt was born directly from this ambition, driven by the desire to replicate the effortless convenience of traditional capsule systems while engineering a product with the absolute minimum environmental impact possible.
Their vision went far beyond simply swapping out traditional plastic or aluminum capsules for a slightly less harmful form of packaging. Instead, the team completely reinvented the medium by designing a system built around a solid tab made entirely of compressed coffee.

This innovative format requires no plastic shell, no aluminum lining, no chemical additives, and no artificial coatings. Alongside the novel coffee tabs themselves, the team built a complete, cohesive ecosystem that includes a custom-designed compatible machine, specialized packaging, intuitive accessories, and an integrated connectivity system.
Sustainable Design Beyond the Coffee Tab
The holistic philosophy behind Lavazza Tablèt ensures that environmental care is considered at every stage of the product lifecycle, stretching from initial factory production through long-term maintenance and everyday domestic use.
The machine itself is constructed using post-consumer recycled plastics, while its core architecture prioritizes high repairability and low energy consumption. Furthermore, because the tabs are composed entirely of pure coffee, they leave behind only organic waste that can be easily composted, closing the loop on single-serve brewing waste.

This unwavering commitment to sustainable product architecture played a pivotal role in securing the Special Prize with designboom. The Seoul Design Award specifically aims to promote and celebrate projects that successfully achieve a harmonious balance between human needs, broader society, and the natural environment.
Design Excellence Recognized at the Seoul Design Award
Winning the designboom Special Prize requires entrants to meet a series of rigorous conceptual and aesthetic criteria. Award-winning projects must closely align with designboom’s core corporate values: remaining intentionally curious, disrupting traditional categories playfully, and delivering solutions that are fearlessly meaningful.
Ultimately, honored designs must demonstrate a proven ability to think outside the box, create products that genuinely bring joy to daily life, and pursue an industrial design language that goes beyond mere visual beauty to express a bold, functional vision.

Lavazza Tablèt earned third place in its category precisely because of its meticulous attention to detail, harmonious aesthetics, and seamless functionality viewed as an integrated whole rather than a collection of separate parts.
The machine’s technical specifications speak volumes about this cohesive approach. Features such as the height-adjustable cup rest equipped with a durable metal grid, the smooth sliding mechanism for inserting the coffee tab, and the transparent water tank that allows users to monitor fluid levels at a glance are all clear examples of a project conceived for intuitive, frictionless operation.
Through these thoughtful details, the design elevates the everyday user experience while actively protecting the environment.
