centro-de-artes-celebrates-decade-of-latinx-art-with-mercado-material-exhibition-in-san-antonio

San Antonio’s Centro de Artes is marking a major milestone in the heart of downtown, celebrating a decade of championing Latinx art and culture with its latest landmark exhibition. Curated by Mia Lopez, Mercado/Material opened to the public on October 16, bringing together 16 contemporary artists who transform everyday objects into bold, compelling explorations of Latinx identity, consumer culture, and heritage. The expansive exhibition will remain on view at the free public gallery through March 7, 2027.

Drawing inspiration from the vibrant traditions of Pop art pioneered by figures like Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg, the artists featured in Mercado/Material employ vivid imagery, humor, and popular culture to address complex ideas surrounding labor, commerce, and a sense of belonging. The exhibition showcases a diverse array of mediums, including vibrant paintings, immersive installations, intricate textile works, ceramic sculptures, and detailed works on paper.

Visitors navigating the gallery space encounter familiar visual motifs elevated to the realm of high art. Layered screen prints depicting neighborhood fruit cups, staple grocery items, and neighborhood storefronts sit alongside monumental piñata sculptures and finely crafted ceramic pieces. Among the standout works is Sarita Garcia’s ceramic piece Randy’s, Los Globos, Las Palmas (2026), which captures the textured physical and cultural landscape of community commerce.

San Antonio’s Centro de Artes Celebrates 10 Years with "Mercado/Material"

The aesthetic universe built within the gallery draws direct inspiration from the bustling energy of everyday spaces: markets across San Antonio, street vendors in Chicago, neighborhood bodegas in New York City, and storefronts throughout Mexico. Beneath the playful surface of brightly colored consumer goods and familiar packaging lies a deeper conceptual framework. The works interrogate the social and economic realities of the communities that produce, circulate, and consume these everyday items, mapping out how material culture shapes personal and collective identity.

The thematic focus of Mercado/Material is deeply intertwined with the history of the building that houses Centro de Artes. Located within Historic Market Square, the site itself carries a rich narrative rooted in commerce and community exchange, tracing back to its origins as a produce annex. Over the past ten years, Centro de Artes has established itself as San Antonio’s premier Latinx-focused contemporary art gallery, serving as a vital platform dedicated to presenting the stories, histories, and creative visions of artists from South Texas and beyond.

Operated by the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture, the adaptive-reuse landmark has been successfully transformed into a free, year-round institution for contemporary visual arts. Since its inception as a dedicated gallery space, Centro de Artes has welcomed more than 33,000 visitors annually, cementing its role as a cultural anchor in downtown San Antonio. Over the course of its ten-year history, the institution has proudly exhibited more than 3,100 individual artworks created by approximately 600 artists, reflecting the vast breadth and diversity of contemporary creative practice.
