As the design world turns its attention toward the vibrant programming of the spring season, institutions across the globe are launching an ambitious roster of exhibitions, major international fairs, and high-stakes competitions. From groundbreaking explorations of socialist spaces behind the Iron Curtain to radical urban transit interventions and sustainable horticulture, the coming months offer a rich landscape for architects, urban designers, and creative professionals alike.

Among the standout exhibitions making headlines is a collaborative project at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin. Titled Retrotopia: Design for Socialist Spaces, the exhibition explores the vast and often overlooked body of work produced by architects and designers in the former Eastern Bloc during the Cold War. By displaying both realized and conceptual spaces imagined by creators from behind the Iron Curtain, the exhibit brings to light pioneering work from figures who remain largely unfamiliar to the Western world. Among them are Czech architect Věra Machoninová, Estonian designers Sirje Runge and Bruno Tomberg, and German architect Lutz Brandt. The exhibition offers a rare glimpse into how these designers navigated ideological constraints to conceptualize alternative futures, creating a compelling dialogue about the role of design within distinct sociopolitical frameworks.

The exploration of landscape and the built environment continues in Weil am Rhein, Germany, where the Vitra Design Museum is presenting Garden Futures: Designing with Nature. Running through October 3, 2023, the exhibition was designed by the Milan-based studio Formafantasma and traces both the history and the future potential of the modern garden. The showcase argues for horticulture as a potentially radical means of experimentation and spatial incubation. With a broad scope of inquiry that encompasses contemporary community gardens, green facades, and vertical urban farms, the exhibition features historical and contemporary work by visionary landscape architects Roberto Burle Marx and Mien Ruys, alongside artist Derek Jarman.

Ongoing Exhibitions

The spring calendar is anchored by several major ongoing exhibitions that interrogate the intersections of infrastructure, utopian theory, and architectural drawing.

In Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Harvard Graduate School of Design is currently hosting an exhibition dedicated to the Grand Paris Express at the Druker Design Gallery through March 31, 2023. This showcase accompanies the school’s decision to award its 14th Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design to the Grand Paris Express, currently the largest transit infrastructure project in Europe. Slated for completion in 2030, this ambitious regional plan will add four new metro lines, 125 miles of new tracks, and 68 new stations to the Paris public transit system. The primary goal of the infrastructure project is to weave underserved peripheral neighborhoods back into the fabric of the city center. Visitors to the GSD exhibition can explore project models, detailed renderings, documentary video footage, and other media illuminating the massive scale and civic impact of the winning project.

March 2023: Dates and Events

Meanwhile, in Tallinn, Estonia, the Estonian Museum of Architecture is hosting Forecast and Fantasy: Architecture Without Borders, 1960s–1980s through April 30, 2023. Curated by architectural scholars Andres Kurg and Mari Laanemets of the Estonian Academy of the Arts, the exhibition delves into European architecture during two turbulent decades of the late 20th century. The presentation focuses heavily on the utopian designs produced by the so-called "paper architects." Responding to the emerging technological realities of the 1960s through the 1980s, these designers sought to overthrow the orthodox Modernist utopias rooted in scientific planning and social engineering. Instead, they imagined a radical new harmony among humans, machines, nature, and the built environment. The exhibition showcases the visionary work of more than 30 architects and groups, including Yuri Avvakumov, István B. Gellér, Jozef Jankovič, Archizoom, OHO, and Superstudio.

In Berlin, the Museum of Architectural Drawing is presenting Aldo Rossi. Insulae through May 14, 2023. Organized in collaboration with the Fondazione Aldo Rossi in Milan, the exhibition displays over 110 works by the late Italian master, many of which are being shown to the public for the very first time. The comprehensive exhibition is divided into three thematic sections: Corpus Mediolanensis, Works for Berlin, and Insula. The latter series, from which the exhibition draws its evocative title, features a captivating collection of drawings by Rossi that were directly inspired by architectural models and typologies from classical antiquity.

Events

The spring and early summer seasons also mark the long-awaited return and continuation of several premier international design fairs and festivals.

In Milan, the world’s largest furniture fair, the Salone del Mobile, is returning from April 18 to 23, 2023. Marking its 61st year, the massive event is back in its traditional April slot after experiencing three years of pandemic-related cancellations, postponements, and scheduling adjustments. Drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors, journalists, and industry professionals from around the globe, the fair showcases an expansive array of international furnishings and cutting-edge lighting design. This year’s programming is further enriched by a special, highly anticipated exhibition curated by architect Mario Cucinella.

The festival circuit continues in Spain with Concéntrico 09, running from April 27 to May 2, 2023. The six-day architecture and design festival returns to the city of Logroño for its ninth consecutive year, offering an engaging roster of public events, site-specific installations, and exhibitions scattered throughout the urban fabric. The festival highlights innovative design proposals and conceptual interventions that celebrate the public realm, civic life, and community engagement.

March 2023: Dates and Events

Later in the spring, Chicago will host NeoCon from June 12 to 14, 2023. Established in 1969, this annual commercial interior design fair gathers industry professionals from across sectors to discover and experience the latest commercial design innovations. This year, nearly one million square feet of exhibition space will display upwards of 400 products, featuring innovations from both established industry leaders and emerging design talents.

Competitions

For designers and firms looking to showcase their own built and conceptual work, several major global competitions have announced crucial application deadlines for the spring season.

The Holcim Foundation has set a submission deadline of March 30, 2023, for the Holcim Awards 2023. This prominent global competition recognizes projects that successfully combine sustainable design and construction practices with architectural excellence. Submitted entries are evaluated against the Foundation’s rigorous benchmarks for sustainable construction. Gold, Silver, and Bronze prizes will be awarded across five distinct geographic regions: Europe, North America, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, and the Asia-Pacific. Regional winners will receive substantial cash prizes and an invitation to attend the official prize announcement at the 2023 Venice Biennale of Architecture.

In the United States, the annual AIA National Photography Competition, hosted by AIA St. Louis, has opened its call for entries with a submission deadline of April 3, 2023. The competition seeks submissions from licensed architects and currently enrolled architecture students, honoring excellence in photographic interpretations of the built environment. Winning photographs will be published in Architectural Record and prominently exhibited at the 2023 AIA Conference in April.

Finally, looking ahead to the early summer, Architecture at Zero 2023 has established a submission deadline of June 15, 2023. Presented in part by AIA California, the competition invites design proposals for a new agricultural center in Allensworth, California—the historic first town in the state to be founded, financed, and governed by African Americans. Emphasizing core principles of decarbonization, social equity, and environmental resilience, the competition brief challenges students and professionals alike to formulate designs that honor and advance the site’s enduring aspiration to become a vibrant modern destination for sustainable agriculture and Black history.
